Consultations on Education Act expand
Next component of Our Children, Our Future: Getting It Right includes online participation
Edmonton... Albertans are invited to provide written and electronic input as part of consultations on the new Education Act.
“This legislation is the foundation of our education system, so it is important we get it right,” said Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk. “Hearing the views of students, parents, grandparents, teachers, education and community leaders, and others will help us ensure new legislation reflects Albertans’ vision for their education system and impacts classrooms now and in the future.”
The education.alberta.ca/engage website includes ways for people of all ages to provide input. Elementary school students are invited to mail a letter or drawing to the minister (423 Legislature Building, Edmonton, T5K 2B6) about the changes they would make if they were the education minister for a day. Other students and Albertans are invited to participate in discussion boards about making schools safe and welcoming, making learning relevant, keeping students engaged in learning, and building the skills for future success. Additional opportunities include tweeting using the #abed hashtag, commenting at www.facebook.com/AlbertaEducation, sending an email to engage.education@gov.ab.ca, or sending letters or written submissions to the minister.

Earning your Math re-write:) ...the explanation
We had a discussion as a class yesterday, and made some decisions today. Through class discussion about study habit and looking back at homework records, I found that many students did not prepare for unit final. So I told them that in order to re-write, they have to prove that they deserve the re-write. They thought that was a fair deal, so here are the options that we came up with:
1. I am having Math help/study sessions every day at first recess until next Friday. I am also having help/study sessions at lunch recess on Monday and Thursday. (We also had 2 sessions today) Students are free to give up their breaks to come and study with me. I think that by coming and making good use of that time, students are showing that they deserve a second chance at the test. They are also showing that they are trying to develop good work habits, which is a main goal:)
2. If students don't want to give up their break at school, there is another option! (Which is great for those who love to get out, run around and get some exercise) Students may also study alone or with a parent at home, create study notes/do practice questions from the book, and have a parent sign their notes.
*They can choose to do the re-write, if they do either of these options 5 times by next Friday. In conjunction with developing a good work ethic, they must also complete their homework for the new unit that we will be working on.
I can't wait to see the new results next week and our marks soar! See you all on Monday:)
Ambitious students...
Just wanted to send a great big, "You're awesome!" to the students who decided (by themselves) to stay in and get extra Math help today at break:) Way to take ownership of your learning!

Don't forget to get your test signed and tell your parents about your opportunity to EARN a chance top re-write the test.

Tote
Many of the grade 6s are having trouble carrying all of their books from both lockers and then to the classroom. I suggested that they bring a tote bag that they could keep in their lockers and use to bring their stuff to class.
It is not a necessity, but I know that there are already a few students who do that and they find that it helps.

Food Drive
We will be doing a drive to get each student to bring at least 1 item for their class. If you get the number of items or more for the same number of students in your class, your class will win a prize. This must be completed by Thursday, Oct. 6th.
Don't forget your food items!

BINGO
I'd like to thank anyone who has volunteered for our upcoming bingos, however we still need a few more people. I am in need of a Bonanza Controller and Chairperson, both of these positions need to be filled by someone who has done them before. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THIS IS THANKSGIVING WEEKEND.
I am still looking for volunteers for Nov. 29th bingo.
I would also like to thank everyone for their patience while I have been away, it's been a tough month to say the least.
If you have volunteered for the October 8th bingo and have not heard from me by either email or phone, please call me ASAP.
Again, thank you!

Extreme Writing
The grade 6 class has created their own, personalized Extreme Writing book. They are using it to work on writing fluency. Our class goal is to be able to write 120 words in 10 minutes.
If we can achieve that goal by the end of September, we'll push the limits for October's Extreme Writing challenge!
*Students are to make sure that they complete the first entry, making sure they have 120 words. (Many students did finish this in class.)
-New entries will be written tomorrow so it's important that the first is finished!

BINGO Notice-Please read
Hi everyone and welcome back! I'd like to especially welcome anyone that is new to E.C.P.S, you've chosen an amazing school for your children!
It's time to gear up for another year of bingos! I, along with our Parent Association, appreciate the 4 hours of work it takes to fill a bingo obligation which brings in roughly $1000.00 per bingo. That money goes towards field trips, busing for those trips and is helping build a new playground in the near future.
At our last P.A. meeting, there was many of us trying to come up with incentives for parents to work these bingos so we can continue receiving these major funds. Ideas brought up since last year are:
*Receive a $5 off coupon that can be used towards hot lunch.
*Have the parents that don't work the bingos pay for their child's field trips etc
*Drop the bingos and have everyone pay for field trips, busing etc.
We would appreciate any feedback on this matter. Feel free to call or email me if you have any ideas or would like to give your input, it would be extremely helpful as it's getting more and more difficult to find volunteers.
Our bingo dates for the rest of the year are as follows:
October 8 - Evening
November 29 - Evening
December 15 - Evening
Please call or email me if you can help with any of these bingos.
I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their support for my family over the last month since a fire destroyed our house. Your help has made it much easier to move on after such a devastating loss. Whether it be items that were dropped off at various locations, monetary or emotional support, I can't describe how much it was appreciated.
Again, thank you so much!
